Greening Canterbury-Bankstown

Tree Planting and Management Program

Waratah Group Services is working alongside Sydney Metro as a delivery partner for the Canterbury-Bankstown Tree Planting and Management Program, a significant investment in urban greening and sustainable development.

Through this program, we’re planting 1,728 new trees to restore green space and enhance the liveability of the local area. A pilot program will commence with the planting of 10 trees before 30 June 2025, and the project will commence on 1 July 2025.

What's being planted

As part of the Sydney Metro works, some trees were removed to allow for construction and infrastructure upgrades. To offset this impact, the Tree Planting and Management Program is delivering a 2:1 replacement ratio — meaning two new trees are planted for every one that was removed.

Tree Sizes and Species

Tree size:

Most trees will be 75L, a semi-mature size, approximately 2–3 metres tall at the time of planting, allowing for quicker establishment and earlier shade.

Alternative stock:

45L trees may be used as an alternative when 75L stock is unavailable.

Species selection:

All tree species are selected from Council-approved lists, ensuring they are appropriate for each planting site’s specific conditions and location.

Where You'll See the Change

Trees will be planted in key locations across Canterbury-Bankstown, focusing on sites along the Sydney Metro corridor. Additional sites will also be chosen to ensure all 1,728 trees can be placed where they’ll benefit most.

Suburbs included in the Tree Planting and Management Program:

Bankstown, Belfield, Belmore, Campsie, Canterbury, Earlwood, Hurlstone Park, Lakemba, Punchbowl, and Wiley Park. Each site is carefully assessed to ensure the right tree is planted in the right place.

Caring for What We Plant

Planting is just the beginning. Waratah Group Services will maintain and monitor every tree for approximately two years to ensure strong establishment and long-term success. Our team will provide regular watering and pruning, tree health checks, maintenance reporting and pest and disease management where needed.

Supporting a Greener, More Connected Sydney

This program supports the NSW Government’s Future Transport 2056 strategy — a long-term vision to ensure that by 2056, 70% of Greater Sydney’s population lives within 30 minutes of work, study, or leisure.
Tree planting is one way we help bring that vision to life, making our city more connected, beautiful, sustainable, and community-focused.  Learn more HERE.
